Boxing Headgear

Headgear reduces cuts, abrasions and the accumulated damage of daily sparring. It does not prevent concussion — no headgear does, and any product claiming otherwise is overselling. What it does well is let you spar more often with less superficial damage, which over a training camp matters a great deal.

Open-face vs face-bar

Two styles here, and they suit different purposes.

• Open-face (FG-2900 style): Cheek and temple protection with an unobstructed view. Lighter, cooler, and what most gyms use for technical sparring. Your vision is exactly as it is without headgear, so nothing changes about how you read distance.
• Face-bar / face-saver (FG-5000 style): Adds a bar across the nose and mouth. Substantially more protection for the nose specifically, at the cost of some peripheral vision and airflow. Worth it if you've broken your nose before or you're deep in a hard camp.

Fit

Headgear should sit level with your eyebrows and not move when you shake your head. Too loose and it rotates mid-round, blocking vision at the worst moment. Adjust the rear and crown straps together rather than over-tightening one.

Care

Wipe the interior after every session — headgear absorbs more sweat than any other piece of kit and will develop odour fast if stored damp. Air dry away from direct heat.
