Every pair of boxing gloves closes in one of two ways: laces or hook-and-loop (Velcro). Both protect your hands, but they suit different boxers. Here is how to choose.
What are lace-up boxing gloves?
Lace-up gloves are tied around the wrist, just like professional fight gloves. Because you can tighten every section of the cuff, they give the most secure, customised fit and the best wrist support.
What are Velcro boxing gloves?
Velcro gloves use a wide strap that wraps around the wrist. You can put them on and take them off in seconds without help, which makes them ideal for classes, circuits and training alone.
Which closure gives better wrist support?
Lace-ups usually win. The laces pull the cuff tight against the wrist along its full length. Quality Velcro gloves still offer excellent support, especially with a long cuff and proper hand wraps.
Which is better for sparring?
Many experienced boxers prefer lace-ups for sparring because they never loosen mid-round. Velcro is perfectly safe for sparring as long as the strap is secured and your gym allows it.

FAQ
Do lace-up gloves last longer?
Closure type does not change durability much; leather quality and care matter more.
Can I tie lace-up gloves myself?
It is possible with practice, but most boxers ask a coach or partner. Some tuck the laces into the cuff and tape them.
Are Velcro gloves allowed in competition?
Most amateur and pro competitions use lace-up or approved competition gloves. Check your event rules.
