Boxing Groin Guards & No-Foul Protectors

A boxing groin guard is not the same thing as a sports cup. Cups protect a small area and sit close to the body. A boxing no-foul protector wraps the hips, covers the lower abdomen and kidneys, and is built to absorb a body shot that lands low — which in boxing happens constantly, intentionally or not.

What it actually covers

The protector extends from the waistband down over the groin and around the hips, with padding across the lower abdomen. That coverage is why it's mandatory in professional boxing and why most gyms require one for sparring. The kidneys and floating ribs are the areas fighters most often overlook until they get caught there once.

Fit and sizing

It should sit at your natural waist with the belt firm enough that it doesn't ride down when you move. Too low and the abdominal padding sits below where body shots land, which defeats the point. Sizes run S through XL — measure your waist, not your trouser size, since the belt sits higher than a waistband.

Wearing it

Goes over the shorts in professional boxing, under them in most amateur competition. Check your gym's convention. It should not restrict your stance or your ability to sit down on punches; if it does, it's too large or worn too low.

Care

Wipe the interior after every session and air dry fully before storing. Protectors sit against the body and absorb a lot of sweat.
