Boxing Glove Size Guide: 8oz to 16oz Explained
Glove weight is the single biggest decision when you buy boxing gloves. The number in ounces tells you how much padding sits over your knuckles — and that changes how the glove protects you, how fast it feels and whether your gym will let you spar in it.
Quick answer
- 8–10oz: competition and fast pad work for lighter boxers.
- 12oz: all-round training for lighter adults and juniors.
- 14oz: bag work and general training for most adults.
- 16oz: the standard for sparring — and the safest choice if you only buy one pair.
Glove weight by body weight
| Your body weight | Training / bag | Sparring |
|---|---|---|
| Under 55 kg (120 lb) | 10–12oz | 12–14oz |
| 55–70 kg (120–155 lb) | 12–14oz | 14–16oz |
| 70–85 kg (155–185 lb) | 14oz | 16oz |
| Over 85 kg (185 lb) | 14–16oz | 16–18oz |
This is a general guide. Many gyms require 16oz for all sparring regardless of body weight, so check your coach's rule first.
Why heavier gloves for sparring?
Sparring gloves carry more padding to spread the force of each punch over a wider area. That protects your training partner and your own hands. Lighter gloves feel faster, which is why fighters use them for competition and pad work, but they are not designed for repeated contact with a partner.
Does the glove fit, not just the weight?
Weight is not the same as hand size. With hand wraps on, your fingers should reach the end of the glove and your fist should close comfortably without your knuckles pressing into the front. Lace-up gloves give a closer fit through the wrist than velcro — read our lace-up vs velcro guide if you are unsure.
One pair or two?
If you train several times a week, two pairs makes sense: a 14oz pair for the bag and pads, and a 16oz pair kept for sparring so the padding stays fresh. If you are just starting, one 16oz pair covers everything.
