Focus Mitts vs Punch Paddles: Which Pads Should You Train With?
Pad work is where technique meets timing. The pads your coach holds change the drill — so it's worth knowing what each type does best.
Focus mitts
Focus mitts have a curved, padded target and a thick palm that absorbs power. They're the classic boxing pad.
- Best for: combinations, power shots, body work and realistic punch angles.
- Coach benefit: the curve catches punches cleanly and protects the holder's hands and elbows.
- Choose: curved mitts for power and longer rounds; compact mitts for faster, tighter drills.
Punch paddles
Paddles are flat, lightweight targets held by a handle. They're smaller and quicker to move.
- Best for: speed, accuracy and reaction drills.
- Coach benefit: the paddle can flick out like a punch, so the boxer practises slipping and countering.
- Downside: less shock absorption for heavy power shots.
Which should you buy?
| Goal | Pick |
|---|---|
| Power and combinations | Curved focus mitts |
| Speed and accuracy | Punch paddles or compact mitts |
| Partner training at home | Compact focus mitts |
| Coaching many students | Curved mitts + a pair of paddles |
Tips for better pad sessions
- Holders should meet the punch slightly — don't let the pad collapse back.
- Call short combinations first, then build to longer sequences.
- Add defence: have the holder throw back so the boxer slips and returns.
