Sparring kit checklist – what boxing gear you need

Your First Sparring Kit: The Complete Checklist

Your coach has said you're ready to spar. Before your first round, make sure you have the right protection — it keeps you training longer and makes you a partner people want to work with.

The checklist

  1. 16oz sparring gloves. The standard weight for sparring in most gyms. Lace-up gives the most secure fit. See our glove size guide.
  2. Headgear. Cheek protectors suit most beginners; face-bar headgear adds nose and chin protection. Read how to choose headgear.
  3. Groin guard. Non-negotiable for sparring. Choose by waist size — see our groin guard sizing guide.
  4. Mouthguard. A boil-and-bite guard moulded to your teeth is the minimum.
  5. Hand wraps. 180-inch wraps support your wrist and knuckles under the glove.

Why buy a matching set?

A sparring set gives you gloves, headgear and a groin guard in matching leather in one order — and each piece is sized separately, so your headgear and groin guard fit properly even if your glove weight is different.

Look after your kit

  • Air gloves and headgear after every session — never leave them zipped in a bag.
  • Wipe leather with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally, away from heaters.
  • Wash wraps after every use.
