How to Break In New Leather Boxing Gloves

New white leather boxing gloves

New leather gloves can feel stiff, especially gloves with firm, compact padding. The good news: they mould to your hand quickly if you break them in the right way.

How long does it take to break in boxing gloves?

Usually 4–8 training sessions. Firm “puncher’s” gloves like our Cleto Reyes styles can take a little longer.

Best way to break in gloves

  1. Shadowbox in them for a few rounds to flex the leather.
  2. Light pad work next – this shapes the padding around your fist.
  3. Heavy bag once they feel comfortable.
  4. Open and close your fist repeatedly between rounds.

Should I use heat, water or oil?

No. Soaking, heating or oiling gloves can damage the leather and padding. Normal training is the safest method.

Is stiffness a sign of the wrong size?

Not necessarily. Stiffness is normal; pain or cramped fingers are not. Do the checks in how should boxing gloves fit.

Keep them in shape

Dry them properly after each session – see how to clean boxing gloves.

FAQ

Can I spar in brand-new gloves?

Yes, but sparring gloves feel best after a few pad sessions.

Will Velcro gloves need breaking in?

The padding still needs to mould, but Velcro cuffs feel comfortable straight away.
